This Memorial Day weekend, go beyond the barbecue and embark on a culturally rich journey to Beaufort, South Carolina, the premiere destination for exploring Gullah Culture. This year, the Gullah Traveling Theater, Inc. (GTTI) invites residents and visitors to truly Learn the Story, Honor Our History! through their powerful production, Decoration Day 2026.123

Part of the Gullah National Salute to Service series, this moving production explores the true, original origins of Memorial Day. Rooted in the traditions of formerly enslaved people in the Lowcountry, Decoration Day 2026 brings to life the powerful story of remembrance, freedom, and community that gave rise to this national observance through vibrant music, storytelling, and stagecraft.3

The performances are taking place May 21 (7:00 PM) and May 23 (3:00 PM) at the USCB Performing Arts Center in Beaufort, SC.A Curated Travel Experience3

The Decoration Day performance is the centerpiece of a perfect spring or summer extended getaway, curated for  anyone looking to explore Gullah culture, heritage and history through art and history. GTTI’s program, presented in partnership with Visit Beaufort and Discover South Carolina, offers an opportunity to immerse yourself in a Gullah culture and art inspired travel experience.

As Denise Mason Bullitt, Business Manager for GTTI, noted, “These productions are more than performances—they are opportunities for audiences to connect with history in a meaningful and memorable way”.

While in town, travelers are encouraged to make it an overnight stay and actively support Gullah vendors and local, Gullah-owned businesses in both Beaufort and Bluffton.

The Gullah National Salute to Service continues this summer with Da’ Gullah American Revolutionary Experience. This engaging production highlights the bravery and contributions of Gullah Geechee “heroes and sheroes” during the American Revolution, connecting local heritage to the broader American story. Catch this inspiring performance on June 27th at the USCB Performing Arts Center in Beaufort and on July 18th at the May River Theatre in Bluffton.Tickets are available online, and guests are encouraged to reserve early as seating is limited at gullahkinfolktravelingtheater.org.
