Black Owned Foodie Tour: Jacksonville, FL

A city with over 70 black-owned restaurants and rooted African American history is Jacksonville, Florida. This river city is known for the black heritage that is displayed throughout the entire coast. From the The Ritz Theater & Museum that puts our history on display to the HBCU Edward Waters College that is home for many black students, Jacksonville is one of the most unique cities in the South. 



Since Jacksonville is packed with southern, African American heritage,  we can only expect Southern traditions and Southern cuisine to be some of the highlights  of this coastal city.  Jacksonville locals, and tourists,  have been said to enjoy the food choices in Jacksonville because of the fresh ingredients and the ancestral teachings that have been passed down from generation to generation. Whether it’s the classical southern dishes, natural coastal cookery, and or secret family recipes, African American food is thriving in the city of Jacksonville.

Celestia’s Coastal Cuisine 

Coastal Cuisine at its finest!

Celestia’s Coastal Cuisine is combining our love for soul food along with our tingling tastebuds for seafood. From a Sunday supper that may include oxtails, pork chops, and collard greens and of course mac & cheese to our favorite seafood choices including blue crabs, shrimps; which isn’t completed without corn on the cob, Celestia’s Coastal Cuisine knows exactly what to make to please our palate. 

Mr. Potato Spread

Even though Idaho is the potato state, Mr. Potato Spread in Jacksonville, FL is serving them in a way that takes potatoes to a whole new level. 

Potatoes , which is abbreviated by Mr. Potato Spread as “Pot,” has unique fillings at this Black-Owned restaurant. Crab, vegetables, chicken and bacon, and pulled pork are just a few Southern favorites that filled the potatoes at Mr. Potato spread.

Mama Boys

Soul rolls are what we all need. A deep fried roll with some of our favorites stuffed inside such as collard greens, mac and cheese, crab, and oxtails is what we yearn for from time to time. Once anyone has tasted these rolls, trying more unique dishes is the only option at Mama Boys. From a gourmet crab tray to smoked wings and fries, Mama boys are cooking dishes that are true to the Jacksonville culture  and also the Gullah/Geeche heritage. 

 

Jubilee at DIP Cafe & Pantry 

Sweet treats and good eats!

At Jubilee in Jacksonville, FL, cooks provide the items you wish you could eat everyday. Fish, potato salad, hamburgers and fries, are some of our guilty pleasure items we enjoy but at Jubilee, these dishes are even more delicious.  However, the sweet goodies are what complete dishes at this Black-Owned restaurant. Funnel cakes, sweet potato pie, and banana pudding will ensure that we get dessert to finish whatever meal we have here. 

Many of you can see the Black heritage and foods that we love; our comfort food can be found across Jacksonville, FL. Florida attracts people from all over the world, and in Jacksonville, everyone should expect mouth watering cuisines featuring African American inspired food in Black-Owned restaurants.
