Nestled along the scenic coastal shores of Hilton Head Island, the Beyond the Game Film Festival offers travelers and culture enthusiasts a unique autumn getaway that blends rich Gullah Geechee history with powerful cinematic storytelling. Visitors attending this inspirational two-day event can immerse themselves in thought-provoking discussions on athletic activism while enjoying lowcountry hospitality, picturesque island views, and vibrant local cuisine.
Historic Mitchelville Freedom Park (HMFP) will bring students, athletes and community members together October 21–22, 2026, for its annual film series, Beyond the Game: Sports and Social Change. Through film and conversation, the two-day experience will explore the intersection of sports, leadership, identity, and social change.
For generations, athletes have influenced American life far beyond the playing field. Some have taken highly visible stands, while others have created change through philanthropy, mentorship, and community leadership. Beyond the Game examines the choices that come with influence: What are the risks of taking a stand? Does having a platform create a responsibility to lead?
October 21 — Student-Athlete Experience
Designed for high school students and student-athletes, the first day connects the film’s themes to teamwork, leadership, social media, peer pressure, and personal responsibility. After the screening, students will join a moderated conversation about using their influence to positively impact their teams, schools, and communities. Lunch will be provided.
October 22 — Film & Community Conversation
The conversation continues with community members, educators, coaches, civic leaders, and guests. A cocktail reception will be followed by the film screening, moderated panel, and audience conversation exploring the history of athlete advocacy, expectations placed on Black athletes, and how the changing culture and business of sports influence decisions to speak out, remain silent, or lead in other ways. A cocktail reception will precede the film.
