Bridging History, History Heritage and Travel : Experience History Through Gullah Theater in the Lowcountry

As our nation marks the Semiquincentennial—the 250th anniversary of American Independence—the narrative of our country’s founding is being expanded, enriched, and reclaimed right here in the South Carolina Lowcountry. This summer, history is not just being read; it is being felt, heard, and honored through the powerful theatrical artistry of the Gullah Traveling Theater, Inc. (GTTI).

Bridging History, History Heritage and Travel : Experience History Through Gullah Theater in the Lowcountry

On July 18, 2026, the May River Theatre in Bluffton will host Da’ Gullah American Revolutionary Experience. This original musical production is a vital cultural touchstone, shining a necessary light on the often-overlooked contributions of Black patriots—the “heroes and sheroes”—who navigated the complexities of liberty, family, and survival during the American Revolution.1

Through dynamic storytelling, live music, and the authentic voice of Aunt Pearlie Sue, this performance transcends traditional history. It unveils how Gullah expertise in rice farming, blacksmithing, and carpentry became a hidden engine of colonial success and eventual independence. For heritage travelers, educators, and families, this show is more than a stage play; it is an immersive invitation to connect with the ancestors who helped shape the birth of the United States.
