Black History Month Food: Benne Seed Coffee Cake

Looking for a dessert to make to celebrate Black History Month? Add this heritage-inspired Benne Seed Coffee Cake. This twist on a classic breakfast dessert is the perfect snack to pair while reading your favorite book from a Black author.

Benne Seed Coffee Cake

INGREDIENTS

1 boxed cinnamon swirl coffee cake kit

2/3 cup milk

¼ cup melted butter

1 egg

¼ benne seeds

16 benne wafers

In a large bowl , combine coffee cake mix, milk, melted butter and egg. Spoon half the mixture into a greased or lined 8×8 baking pan.

Sprinkle with half the benne seeds, and half the cinnamon swirl topping. Repeat layers with remaining cake mix, benne seeds and topping, then bake 40-45 mins until done.

Cool and cut into 16 equal squares and top each with a finished benne wafer.

* Benne seeds can be substituted for toasted sesame seeds.
