If you’re seeking a summer escape that blends serene southern charm with profound cultural immersion, look no further than the South Carolina Lowcountry. This season, the Gullah Traveling Theater, Inc. (GTTI) is setting the stage in Beaufort and Bluffton for its must-see Gullah National Salute to Service. This special series runs from May through July 2026 and features two original, full-stage musicals that bring essential Gullah Geechee history to life.
The Lowcountry Stage: How the Gullah Traveling Theater is Preserving Heritage and Honoring Service Through Art
The arts serve as a powerful vessel for honoring legacy, and GTTI is dedicated to preserving and presenting the rich history and culture of the Gullah Geechee people through these unique theatrical productions, music, and storytelling. These are “more than performances—they are opportunities for audiences to connect with history in a meaningful and memorable way,” according to GTTI leadership.
The Two-Part Artistic Journey
The series begins with Decoration Day, a moving musical that explores the true origins of Memorial Day. This powerful production reveals how the national observance is rooted in the traditions of remembrance, freedom, and community first celebrated by formerly enslaved people in the Lowcountry.
- See it: May 21 and May 23 in Beaufort at the University of South Carolina Beaufort (USCB).
Continuing the salute, Da’ Gullah American Revolutionary Experience offers a vital, often-untold perspective on America’s founding. This production spotlights the bravery and key contributions of Gullah Geechee “heroes and sheroes,” effectively connecting local Gullah heritage to the broader American narrative.
- See it: June 27 in Beaufort (USCB) and July 18 in Bluffton at the May River Theatre.
Presented in partnership with cultural advocates like Visit Beaufort and Discover South Carolina, the Gullah National Salute to Service reinforces the region’s commitment to cultural tourism. Audiences can expect vibrant music, compelling storytelling, and an immersive theatrical experience that celebrates the enduring impact of Gullah Geechee culture.
