A Destination Like No Other
Hilton Head Island’s natural beauty—its moss-draped oaks, whispering marshes, and sandy shores—makes it an idyllic backdrop for such a meaningful occasion. And beyond the festival, you’ll find Black-owned restaurants, boutiques, and tours that amplify the island’s cultural richness. Whether you’re kayaking Broad Creek, biking shaded trails, or simply breathing in the salt air, the spirit of freedom is felt everywhere.
Why Mitchelville?
Long before Juneteenth was recognized nationwide, freedom was already being lived at Mitchelville. Founded in 1862, this community of formerly enslaved people built homes, ran schools, voted, and governed themselves, laying the groundwork for the freedom story we honor today.
