Southern Hospitality: Outdoor Nuptials in Thomasville, NC

Location: Thomasville, NC, US

Event Date:  Sep 30, 2017

Couple Names: Lila Anton & Chris ShawB

1. How did you meet?

We met at work. It was shortly after I moved to LA from NYC. Chris was the producer on my first project at my new company. We were friends for the first few months. He was always so helpful, suggesting where I should live, helped me go get my car, etc. I just moved from NYC so didn’t have any friends and I knew he was from the South so I just thought he was a nice guy, little did I know he had his own plans. lol

2. How did the proposal happen?

We were in Cinque Terre, Italy. We hiked through the towns during the day, and I did notice that he was walking really fast and I was getting annoyed that he wasn’t really enjoying and relaxing during the hike. When we got back to our Air Bnb he said ‘Let’s go out and celebrate’. Chris loves to celebrate all the time so I didn’t think anything of it. He said he found perfect restaurant, the restaurant is called ‘Billy’s’ which is my dad’s name. So we started walking towards the train to go over to the next town. I remember looking up in the sky and it was this most beautiful sunset where the sky turned bright orange, purple, pink colors. So we got off the train, and Chris was looking at his google maps looking to find the restaurant and then he said ‘hey my google maps isn’t working too well, do you mind we sit on a bench while I figure it out’ so I didn’t think anything of it. We set down, I was looking at the ocean and was just looking at the last bit of sun that was peaking from the ocean and was thinking to myself ‘man, life can’t get any better than this’. At that exact moment Chris said ‘in the mean time I have a question for you’ and I was so sure he was going to ask me what I was ordering as entree for dinner so I turned towards him with the dumbest expression on my face and then he said ‘would you marry me?’ and then I started smile crying. I couldn’t believe life could be this sweet, at that moment I knew life with him would always be sweet.

3. When did they know he/she was “the one?”

I don’t know if there was this ‘one thing’ that made me think ‘he is the one’ but I think I knew my life was better with him. I feel the most comfortable and at home when I am with him. We encourage each other to be our best selves but we also remembers to have fun and always ready for an adventure

4. Tell us about the wedding inspiration.

Southern Hospitality. We had people from all walks of life coming together for our wedding. Some of my friends and family never been to the south so I wanted to make sure they got the true southern hospitality.

Southern casual but fancy fun. Lots of colors. Non-traditional. I wanted to feel like it was a wedding that was very me and Chris. I think we accomplished it.

5. Any special details or fun memories you’d like to share?

I loved that my friend sang me down the aisle. I was trying to think what song I wanted to walk down the aisle to and I realized I didn’t want it to be a snappy moment. I wanted to walk proudly to the next chapter of my life. So she sang Nina Simone’s ‘feeling good’ and it was perfect.

I also wanted to include some part of my Japanese upbringing in to our ceremony, so we did what’s done in lot of Japanese wedding which is called ‘kagami biraki’ where the newly weds crack open a brawl of sake. That was fun!
