Designing Spaces, Objects, and Opportunities

The NeKeia Collection: A Global Artisanal Vision
Her latest venture, The NeKeia Collection for Ngala Trading Co, represents a significant expansion of her creative reach into product design. This stunning line of handmade artisanal leather lighting and furniture is meticulously crafted in Johannesburg and Cape Town, South Africa. For McSwain, this collection is more than a commercial endeavor; it is a testament to her belief that design is fundamentally about the hands, heritage, and humanity behind every piece. By bridging her Southern roots with African craftsmanship, she brings a unique global perspective to high-end home furnishings.

Heritage in the Making: The Inspiration behind The NeKeia Collection for Ngala Trading Co
“There was something sacred about standing in a Johannesburg workshop, watching
artisans bring my vision to life. I didn’t just visit the motherland, I touched it, ate from it,
learned from it, and let it teach me what craftsmanship really means. Creating premium
lighting and furnishings straight from South Africa wasn’t just a business decision. It felt like
homecoming. And when you have partners who share the vision, the work doesn’t feel like
work, it feels like purpose.”
“Every piece started the same way in memory and familiarity. When it came time to give
these pieces their identity, I named them not to sell the names, but to honor where they came
from. I’m a firm believer that every piece from The NeKeia Collection deserves a story equally
as beautiful as the hands that made it. Maybe it’s the memory of a cheetah yawning at sunset.
Maybe it’s my mama’s laugh when she thinks her own jokes are funny. Maybe it’s the warming
sound of my sister’s voice as she calls me “Sister”. Maybe it’s the sound of dice hitting the
backgammon board and my daddy teaching me the game. I don’t know what it is but it feels
good. It feels real and it feels warm. I boarded a flight and carried those memories and feelings
to my partners at Ngala and the vendors & artisans in South Africa. We sketched. We shaped.
We revised. We rediscovered and polished until the feeling became form.”
