Heritage Food: Black-Owned Gumbo Mixes For Your Kitchen

A popular dish in Louisiana, West Africa, the Lowcountry of South Carolina, and many Southern places in the South is Gumbo. When we hear the word gumbo, comfort comes to mind. This comfort food has healed the hearts and bodies of many and is a mixture that can be altered or duplicated to your liking. More veggies or more meats, gumbo can be changed to your preference and still filled with amazing flavors and spices that remind you of home. Gumbo is such a Southern tradition that there are Black Owned Gumbo Mixes that are making our flavor journey to Gumbo land much easier. Below are a few mixes you should try in your next Gumbo.

Each of these mixes are perfect for making Gumbo and are crafted through the history of Gumbo. Gumbo is a sacred tradition to the South and our black heritage.

History of Gumbo

Many can agree that Gumbo is a dish that is known more in the creole culture, however, this dish dates back to West Africa; which is where many of our cajun, creole and Southern dishes originate. In West Africa, the word gumbo comes from the work “ki ngombo,” which is what we would know to or referred to as okra. Originally gumbo was made with okra and can still be found with okra and other ingredients as well. From seafood to sausage and tomatoes or peppers, Gumbo is a mixture of a little bit of this and a whole lot of that and turns into something amazing. This roux style soup texture is awesome when paired with white rice and is ideal for serving for large families and friends gatherings.
