  1. Have “Plan B” food options for the kids. While we all love to boast about our childrens’ sophisticated pallets, let’s be real with ourselves and spare the disappointment when your underage guests don’t leave their plates clean. Have a more simplistic version of whatever you’re preparing for the entree. Leave out spicy seasonings and make sure that everything is super tender so that it’s easier to eat.
  2. Ditch the Kids Table. What better way to teach your kids how to eat with proper etiquette, than to lead by example. Your kids are more likely to behave and pick up good dining habits if they see adults do it first. Kids love to mimic, so give them something good to practice.
  3. Opt for faux glassware and flatware in lieu of the real thing. You can stick to the real thing for the plates and platters. Since the kids will most likely be picking up their own drinks, forks, and knives, take off the pressure of breaking their glass or heavier utensils, and get them something nice, yet kid-manageable.
  4. While you’re hosting a kid friendly dinner party, it’s ok to separate the kids from the adults at some point during the evening. You’ll appreciate it, but they’ll appreciate it more. For large dinner parties, I like to book a sitter to watch after the kids while the adults enjoy cocktails and conversation. Alternatively, if there are any older kids in attendance, just ask them if they’d like to earn a few extra bucks by watching the younger ones.
  5. Anticipate kids. I know that seems logical to a kid friendly dinner, but simply tolerating kids is not creating a kid friendly environment. Have snacks ready upon arrival, know their ages, be prepared for spills, and keep them entertained. My favorite way to entertain kids is by putting them to work in the kitchen to keep them active and having fun.
