There is a distinct and sacred magic found across the campuses of Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs). It lives in the rhythmic pulse of the marching bands, the shared legacy of excellence, and the vibrant sense of community that fills every corner of campus life. At Benedict College in Columbia, South Carolina, that sense of community has received a stunning, luxurious upgrade through a transformative dining space renovation led by Thompson Hospitality’s premier luxury LuxeLife Dining designer, Justin Kiaku.

For Kiaku—a proud graduate of North Carolina Central University (NCCU)—this project was far more than an interior design assignment. It was a homecoming, an act of service, and a celebration of HBCU culture crafted by an alumnus who deeply understands the spirit and power of the campus experience.

A Vision Rooted in HBCU Pride and Southern Hospitality

Campus dining facilities have long been the beating heart of student life. They are where lifelong friendships are forged over shared meals, late-night study sessions unfold, and campus culture flourishes. Recognizing the vital role this space plays in daily student wellness and morale, Benedict College partnered with Thompson Hospitality to deliver a dining experience that reflects the institution’s rich legacy and bright future.

Bringing this vision to life was luxury designer Justin Kiaku. Grounded in his professional expertise in high-end hospitality design and nurtured by his formative years at NCCU, Kiaku approached the Benedict College dining renovation with intent, reverence, and creative brilliance.

“POV: They gave the HBCU kid the keys and said ‘reimagine campus dining.’ Very honored to lead the creative vision and redesign of both the student dining hall and faculty & staff dining facilities at Benedict College. My niche has become challenging what a ‘traditional dining hall’ is supposed to look and feel like. I wanted less of the basic tables and chairs and incorporating more soft seating, luxury inspired lounges, collaborative spaces, and places students actually WANT to stay in. Because students don’t just come to the dining hall to eat. They connect. Study. Laugh. Meet new people. Take a break between classes. Sometimes they just need somewhere comfortable to EXIST. Campus dining plays a major role in nourishing the soul of a campus, and I believe the environment should reflect that. This is officially HBCU project #19 for me and my biggest yet. Best of luck to Benedict College, and I truly hope the student body enjoys this space as much as I enjoyed creating it. Not just somewhere to eat. Somewhere to belong.”

• Culturally Grounded Artistry: Carefully curated artwork and textural finishes that honor Black history, Southern heritage, and Benedict College’s distinguished legacy as a historic pillar in South Carolina.
• High-End Hospitality Finishes: Durable, high-traffic luxury materials—from tailored upholstery and custom wood paneling to sleek stone countertops—ensuring the space remains as resilient as it is beautiful.
