North Carolina’s beauty in the spring is truly unmatched. I know many will debate me on this but I welcome all friendly discussions over coffee and pastries. Seasonal living has inspired me to design my outdoor space to reflect comfort and peace. The quiet, unexpected arrival of daffodils along the fence, or the slow, intentional budding of leaves on our massive fig tree, always leaves me in awe.
If you are looking to achieve a place of serenity, I have 5 tips on how you can spruce up your outdoor space this spring!
- Create a Cozy Front Porch ….P.S. Don’t forget the Flowers
A cozy front porch is the center of every southern home, especially during the spring. Place hanging baskets filled with flowers and delicious edible treats like strawberries, fragrant and pollinator-friendly herbs, to ensure your morning coffee breaks are slow and romantic. You can also design your space with gorgeous containers filled with spring-loving flowers like roses (choose disease-resistant varieties for easier care), lush peonies, delicate tulips and African marigolds. Not only do they complement one another, but having them potted near each other will remind you of being in a field of beautiful flowers.
P.S. To elevate the cozy vibes, mix and match different container styles, colors, sizes and textures.
- Welcome Nature Intro Your Space
We have the pleasure of waking up to the sweet sounds of birds chirping. This is a special feature of my home and I am quite proud of it. Birds are fabulous creatures to invite into your outdoor space because they munch on weeds and annoying pests that love to eat up your garden crops. If you are interested in inviting them to your yard, adding attractive elements like bird baths and feeders where birds can occasionally commune are essential. You can even add affordable water features like a solar-powered pump that you can place in the middle of your bird bath, to create graceful waterfalls and soothing sound effects. Showing your local birds some gratitude with these elements will instantly make your home feel like a cozy southern cottage.
- Be One with Nature’s Music
There is nothing more peaceful than the melodic sounds of windchimes. Adding these rhythmic pieces to your porch or patio will create an inviting environment that you cannot resist to be in.
- Comfort is in the Details
Spring is a season of romance, new beginnings and rejuvenation … so, comfort is truly in the details. Comfortable seating where you can enjoy a glass of homemade sweet tea or enjoy the company of loved ones (or plants), is the perfect addition to any outdoor scene. For more southern vibes … add lace curtains on either side of your porch for a wispy effect. Imagine, flowing curtains and a wind chime singing at the end of a long work day.
- Personality is a Must
Curating a space is all about putting your style and passions on display. All of the tips shared mean nothing if you don’t show up and show out. Add colors, textures, your favorite plants, fragrant flowers or even create a little reading area where you can go out and enjoy all that nature offers you.1
