We were excited to connect with entrepreneur and tastemaker Robin Wilson. This Austin, Texas native is the Founder of Robin Wilson Home & CLEAN DESIGN HOME®, author of CLEAN DESIGN: Wellness for your Lifestyle. Living in New York, this Southern Belle has dedicated the last 20 years to educating consumers on the power of a wellness-focused interior home ecosystem. Through her lifestyle brand, she focuses on hypoallergenic and sustainable products to support 1 in 5 (60 million Americans) who are affected by allergies or asthma.
We asked Robin to take us down memory lane through her life in Texas and Juneteenth memories, especially from when she was young, celebrating the holiday with her family to how she now celebrates the holiday with her daughter.
How do you celebrate Juneteenth?
Robin Wilson – I have celebrated Juneteenth every year since my childhood, starting with a reflective moment. And it is about having a few favorite foods and libations. One of the recent traditions is to go onto Ancestry.com every year on this day, review the family tree, tell my daughter stories about her ancestors, and see if there are any new connections.

What do you love about celebrating Juneteenth?
Robin Wilson – Juneteenth for a Texan meant studying the subject in class and then going home to hear the ‘real story’ from my elders. I love the fact that it is like the 4th of July for the Black community – one day that can be celebrated by everyone from any religion. It is about food and family.

Favorite Black-owned food brands or restaurants in Texas?
What’s your favorite recipe from Watermelon and Red Birds: A Cookbook for Juneteenth and Black Celebrations by Nicole A. Taylor, and why?
Robin Wilson – I chose the Strawberry Lemonade and Beef Ribs recipes – I remember drinking Big Red soda as a child for Juneteenth, the one day a year that we were allowed to have lots of sugary drinks. And the BBQ was over-the-top for a Texas kid – plates of ribs, sausages, potato salad, coleslaw, peach cobbler, and cakes! Plus, someone was always making hand-churned ice cream. So many memories!
