Heritage Garden Inspiration: Guide to Limelight Hydrangeas from Memphis Tastemaker
Low Maintenance: According to Knight, “The best thing about Limelight Hydrangeas is that they are so low maintenance! They are tolerant of full sun, they tolerate temperatures well below freezing and they work in zones 3-9! Because this variety blooms on new wood each year, you don’t have to worry about vulnerable new buds surviving the winter, like with their macrophylla counterparts. “

Keep It Healthy: Need help with maintaining, Knight explains, “While you don’t have to prune them, and really shouldn’t for the first few years, I prefer to leave the dried blooms on for visual interest through winter. I then trim them off in spring, just as the plant starts to show a bit of green at the base. At this time I like to feed mine a little HollyTone fertilizer.”

According to Deen Knight, “Some varieties of limelight hydrangeas can grow very tall (6-8 feet) and wide so it’s important to check the tag and know your space. My favorites are these “little bobo.” They stay around 2.5-3’ tall and equally as wide. I like to plant them expecting them to fully touch and become a hedge. Even in the first year, the effect was beautiful! They are in their peak in the month of July, but still look great in August and well into the fall as they become “antiqued.”
