Gullah Art Showcase: Red Piano Too Art Gallery Hosts 27th Annual Summer Show

Gullah Art Showcase: Red Piano Too Art Gallery Hosts 27th Annual Summer Show

As a Lowcountry native, I have a keen appreciation for Gullah art. I spend my weekends traveling to galleries, exhibits, and boutiques to scout new artists and pieces. One of the premier locations highlighting the contributions of Gullah artists is the Red Piano Too Art Gallery, founded by Mary Mack, owner and artist of the Lowcountry. This year marks the 27th Annual Summer Show for the Red Piano Too Art Gallery.

Featured Artist for the show is Diane Britton-Dunham… Diane is the longest exhibiting artist in the gallery…she has been with the gallery since the earliest days. This year the Red Piano Too Art Gallery on Saint Helena Island SC,is honored to host a “Pop-Up Trunk Show” showcasing the Jonathan Green Lowcountry purse Collection signed by him, supporting the Women’s Empowerment Initiative. The Pop-up Trunk Show and The Art of Diane Britton Dunham is a part of the gallery’s 27th Annual Summer Show featuring some of the south’s most important Folk Artists, on Saturday August 10, 2019…10:00 AM — 4:00 PM.

Artist Diane Britton-Dunham

“This is the very first gallery I exhibited in 29 years ago! It was the premier gallery for outsider and folk art in the southeast, and I have been lucky to be a part of its growth. What’s most important is the gallery was the only one to feature African American/Gullah art in the region. Most contemporary galleries deemed this style of painting to be too “primitive” or too “brightly painted” to exhibit in galleries at the time. Our art was rare, although that’s hard to believe that now, with all the Gullah artists, festivals and galleries all over. The Red Piano Too inspired so many of the successful artist we have in our region today, many got their start at the RP2, mentored by Mary Mack, the owner. This is a jewel in our midsts, come out to not just to see my artwork, or the fabulous Green purses, but show appreciation to a gallery that has had a tremendous impact on our arts community”.

Check out a few of Diane’s works on display at the 27th Annual Summer show. I have it on my calendar and will be there for sure. Can’t wait to attend and hope to see you there!
