A Cultural Pilgrimage: Your Guide to the SC250 Indigo Festival

A Cultural Pilgrimage: Your Guide to the SC250 Indigo Festival

South Carolina is a state of deep, resonant stories, but few are as vital or as rooted in the land as the history of the Gullah Geechee people. This September, the Lowcountry invites you to not just visit, but to listen and learn.

Whether you are a historian, a descendant tracing your roots, or simply someone looking to reconnect with the rhythms of the land, this guide will help you navigate your journey to Williamsburg and Georgetown counties for the SC250 Indigo Festival.

The festival is a deep dive into the agricultural heritage of the state. Indigo was once known as “blue gold,” and the festival honors the enslaved Africans whose expert knowledge made that wealth possible.1

  • What to expect: You will find hands-on indigo dyeing workshops, Carolina Gold rice tastings, live music, and a marketplace featuring local artisans.
  • A Simple 3-Day Itinerary:
    • Thursday, Sept 3: Arrive and settle in. Take a quiet afternoon walk through downtown Kingstree to appreciate the historic architecture and local shops.
    • Friday, Sept 4: Focus on farm heritage. Visit Williams Vineyard & Farm to see the muscadine vines, then head to the C.W. Rush African American Museum to ground yourself in Gullah Geechee history.
    • Saturday, Sept 5: Festival Day. Spend the day (11 a.m.–6 p.m.) at Williams Vineyard & Farm. Enjoy the workshops, vendors, and the rice cook-off.

Where to Stay: The George Hotel

For a comfortable and curated stay in the region, The George Hotel is our top recommendation. It serves as an excellent home base for your excursions between Williamsburg and Georgetown counties. We recommend booking well in advance, as local accommodations fill up quickly during heritage event weekends.

Exploring Georgetown & Williamsburg Counties

This region is best experienced at a “Lowcountry pace.” It is not about rushing from one site to another, but about pausing to understand the landscape.

  • Local Storytelling: Look for documentaries by local storytellers like Inetta Jenkins Fulton and Wandy Wallace Taylor. They provide invaluable context on how these towns have evolved over generations.
  • The Power of Place: Take the time to visit local historic markers. The region is rich with the history of the Gullah Geechee corridor—innovators who have shaped not just South Carolina, but American history at large.
  • Bring a Journal: There is so much wisdom shared in conversation here. Bring a notebook to jot down the stories you hear from the people you meet in Nesmith and Kingstree.

Honoring the Legacy: Gullah-Owned Businesses

Supporting the community is the most authentic way to preserve the culture. When you purchase goods here, you are participating in a living history.

  • How to find them: A great first stop is the C.W. Rush African American Museum. The staff there are the best resource for learning which local Black-owned galleries, farms, and shops to support during your visit.
  • What to look for: Seek out authentic sweetgrass baskets, local farm-grown produce, and traditional Gullah crafts. Every purchase helps keep the craftsmanship and the culture thriving for the next generation.
