A Weekend in the Lowcountry: A Cultural Pilgrimage through Heritage, Artistry, and Community

A Weekend in the Lowcountry: A Cultural Pilgrimage through Heritage, Artistry, and Community

From October 16 to 18, 2026, a wonderful group of travelers, storytellers, and culture lovers came together across Savannah, Georgia, and Bluffton, South Carolina, for A Weekend in the Lowcountry. More than just a typical weekend getaway, this was a soul-nourishing journey rooted in Black heritage, Gullah Geechee traditions, incredible food, living history, and local craftsmanship.

Instead of sticking to standard tourist spots, the trip focused on genuine connection—creating time and space to sit down, chat with, and learn directly from local culture bearers, master artisans, and historians. Over three unforgettable days, participants truly felt the heart of the Lowcountry, a place where history lives on in sweetgrass baskets, spoken stories, and coastal waters.

Friday, October 16: Welcome to the Lowcountry

The trip kicked off in Savannah at the gorgeous riverfront sanctuary, Thompson Savannah, where the historic district meets the Eastern Wharf. With its stunning views of the Savannah River, it was the perfect place for attendees to settle in, meet one another, and start building community.

The weekend began with an intimate dinner reception featuring classic Lowcountry flavors and warm southern hospitality. The highlight of the evening was listening to keynote reflections from renowned Gullah cultural preservationist Ms. Kitty Green (@discovering.the.lowcountry). Her warmth, spirit, and deep connection to her ancestors set such a meaningful, grounded tone for the rest of the time together.

Saturday, October 17: A Living Legacy in Bluffton, SC

On Saturday morning, guests took a private charter over to the historic town of Bluffton, South Carolina, for a hands-on day at the Bluffton Gullah Cultural Heritage Center (@blufftongullahheritagecenter). They spent the day diving into the traditional arts that have kept Gullah Geechee culture thriving for generations.

Everyone got to jump into two amazing masterclasses:

  • Sweetgrass Basket Weaving: Taught by master artisan Ms. Jennifaye Singleton (@geechee_gyal_baskets), participants learned the detailed African tradition of coiling sweetgrass and palmetto leaves—a craft lovingly passed down through generations.
  • Heritage Quilting: Led by fine artist Lisa Moore (@lisamooreart), guests explored the rich storytelling behind Southern textiles and stitched their own handmade keepsakes to take home.

All that crafting was paired with an authentic, delicious Lowcountry lunch catered by the beloved Ma Daisy’s Porch, reminding useveryone how shared meals keep history and community alive.

Sunday, October 18: Carry the Story Forward

The final morning started under Savannah’s beautiful moss-draped live oaks with a Black history walking tour led by acclaimed local historian Rita Fuller Yates (@ritafulleryates). As attendees walked through historic squares and charming side streets, Rita shared inspiring stories of Black resilience, architecture, and community leadership that helped build Savannah.

The pilgrimage wrapped up with a relaxed, heartfelt Lowcountry farewell brunch, followed by a photo session along the river. Looking out over the water, everyone reflected on the journey, shared smiles, and celebrated new friendships.
