Putting on makeup for tailgating is a literal art form — especially if you’re tailgating in the South.
Your makeup has to survive the beginning of the tailgate, the entire game, and sometimes whatever happens after the game. We’re talking eight hours or more in makeup, usually in hot weather, with very few opportunities for touch-ups.
So here are a few things I do to help my makeup last and still look good throughout the day.
Beauty Guide: Tailgating Makeup Tips

First, start with a good hydrating moisturizer.
Even if you have oily skin like me, you still want your skin hydrated before you start putting makeup on. You just don’t want anything so heavy that your makeup starts sliding around.
Second, sunscreen. Always.
And if your skin can tolerate a sunscreen-and-makeup-primer combination, even better. You can protect your skin and give your makeup a little extra help staying in place.
Third, choose a long-wearing foundation.
Whether you like light, medium, or full coverage, tailgating is probably not the day to experiment with a foundation that disappears after three hours.
And if you’re oily like me, try using setting spray after your foundation and then again after powder, if you choose to use powder. That little layering technique can really help with longevity.
Fourth, tubing or waterproof mascara.
Because between heat, humidity, sweat — and depending on how your team is playing, maybe tears — regular mascara might not be the move.

And finally, keep your lip easy.
Find one of your favorite lip shades in a moisturizing gloss or balm and stick it in your pocket.
Y’all know how strict these venues are getting with handbags, so having one little lip product you can pull out throughout the day makes life so much easier.
The goal with tailgating makeup isn’t perfection for eight hours.
It’s makeup that can survive the day and doesn’t require carrying your entire makeup bag into the stadium.
