Gullah Celebration: Exhibit of The Great Migration

Gullah Celebration: Exhibit of The Great Migration

If you are looking for a reason to head to Hilton Head Island, you should definitely make the Annual Gullah Celebration that reason. This annual festival held all month long during the month of February is full of curated events highlighting Gullah culture with a focus on food, arts, history and more. Today we are highlighting one of my favorite topics, Gullah art. One of the best parts of the Gullah Celebration is their Winter Exhibition. This year’s exhibit focuses on the story of the Great Migration and features a number of artists in various mediums from original canvas pieces to traditional sweetgrass baskets. We are giving you a sneak peek of the exhibit below and encourage you to take a weekend trip this year and many more years to come!

The Arts Ob We People: Winter Exhibition and Sale is a display of original work by emerging and leading artists that represents the life of Gullah people on Hilton Head Island and the surrounding community. Artists will be onsite at various times throughout the exhibit, check for exact schedules at gullahcelebration.com. Private group tours are available by request.

We love this piece by Diane Britton Dunham. This Louisana native and lowcountry resident is one of our favorite Gullah Artists.

These pieces of modern art are a perfect addition to a city loft or condo.

We can envision these pieces in a ladies lounge or as the anchor of a Black Southern Belle bedroom. A great gift for a mom to give a daughter as well.

A perfect display of the traditional sweet grass baskets that are a signature part of lowcountry art and design.

We love the vibrancy and color of these pieces. These are the perfect heirloom pieces to add to any art collection.
